London: Transport for London (TFL) is set to ban all non-folding e-bikes on the Tube and trains by the end of the March, following multiple incidents of the bikes catching fire. As per a report by Daily Mail, Mayor Sadiq Khan announced the decision after a comprehensive safety review, emphasising that public safety is his top priority.
Potential Fire Risks and Safety Concerns
The ban comes after several reported incidents of fires caused by e-bikes on London’s transport network. In February, an e-bike caught fire on a platform at Rayners Lane Tube station, prompting urgent safety concerns. A similar incident in March 2024 saw an e-bike burst into flames during rush hour at Sutton Station, forcing the commuters to evacuate.
E-bikes and e-scooters use lithium batteries, which store significant energy in a small space. According to the London Fire Brigade (LFB), these batteries can overheat, be crushed, or be overcharged, potentially causing fires or explosions. Charlie Pugsley, deputy commissioner for prevention at LFB, told Daily Mail, “While we recognize the sustainable benefits e-bikes bring, we have been seeing an e-bike or e-scooter fire every other day, on average.”
Mixed Reactions to the Ban
The train drivers’ union Aslef welcomed the decision, having long advocated for restrictions on non-folding e-bikes due to the dangers they pose. Finn Brennan, Aslef's London Underground organizer, told Daily Mail, “It will reduce the risk of a serious accident and prevent unfolded e-bikes from blocking exits in emergencies.”
However, industry representatives have criticised the move. James Metcalfe, co-founder of VOLT Bikes, expressed disappointment, stating, “The blanket ban of all non-folded e-bikes is a huge setback for active and sustainable transport in London.” He added that education and enforcement should be prioritised over broad restrictions.
