Covid-19 cases have surged in Hong Kong and Singapore. Health authorities have warned of a fresh wave spreading across Asia. Both cities have reported their highest number of case in months, alongside increased hospitalizations and virus detection in wastewater.
According to Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the city’s Center for Health ProtectionIn Hong Kong, the virus’ activity has reached a “quite high" level,. He said that the percentage of respiratory samples testing positive for Covid-19 has reached a year-high.
Data from the centre reveals severe cases — including deaths rising to 31 in the week ending May 3, marking the highest weekly cases in about a year. Notably, the rise in cases have not matched previous peak levels.
Singapore has also experiencing a rise in cases. The city-state’s health ministry reported a 28% week-on-week surge in cases, reaching an estimated 14,200 cases in the week through May 3. Daily hospitalizations have also risen approximately 30%.
This marks Singapore’s first public update on covid-19 case numbers in almost a year. The ministry attributed the rise to factors such as waning immunity, but clarified that current circulating variants do not appear to be more transmissible or severe than those encountered earlier in the pandemic.
Situation In India
According to the official COVID-19 dashboard of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, there are currently only 93 active COVID-19 cases in the country. As of now, no new wave of COVID-19 cases has been reported in India.
