New Delhi: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit India next week to hold talks on the long-standing border issue with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. His visit comes ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China.

Wang and Doval are the special representatives of the two Asian countries who lead talks related to the question of the border. The development comes at a time when both countries have taken a series of steps to improve ties.

Doval and Wang Yi had last met in June at the SCO National Security Advisers' meeting in China.

Reportedly, a meeting is also possible between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the SCO summit. This will be PM Modi’s first trip to China since 2018.

Earlier, last year, India and China reached a consensus for the partial resolution of the standoff in Ladakh. Earlier this year, China resumed the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra and India resumed giving visas to Chinese tourists. The two countries are also likely to resume direct flights within weeks, which has been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier last week, Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong took a swipe at US President Donald Trump and backed India after Trump announced 50% tariffs against India for its continued purchase of Russian oil. “Give the bully an inch, he will take a mile,” the Chinese ambassador to India wrote on X.
