New York: The war of words between New York’s Democratic nominee for mayor, Zohran Mamdani, and United States President Donald Trump intensified on Wednesday. Mamdani alleged that Trump was attacking him as he was desperate to "distract" the people of the country from his war.

In the video clip going viral on social media, the 33-year-old Mayoral candidate could be heard saying that he would "fight back" against the Republicans.

“Yesterday, Donald Trump said that I should be arrested, that I should be deported, that I should be de-naturalised, and he said those things about me, someone who stands to be the first immigrant mayor of this city in generations, someone who would also be the first Muslim and the first South Asian mayor in the city’s history," Mamdani said.

"It is Less so because of who I am, because of where I come from, because of how I look or how I speak, and more so because he wants to distract from what I fight for," he added. Notably, Mamdani is on the target of Republicans after his victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic New York primary.

Hitting out at Trump, Mamdani said, "I fight for working people. I fight for the very people that have been priced out of this city, and I fight for the same people that he said he was fighting for. This is the same President who ran on a campaign of cheaper groceries, who ran on a campaign about easing a suffocating cost of living crisis, and ultimately, it is easier for him to fan the flames of division than to acknowledge the ways in which he has betrayed those working class Americans, not just in the city, but across this country."

The New York's Mayoral candidate also slammed the US President's the "One Big Beautiful Bill". "Legislation that will steal food from the hungry. Legislation that looks to build upon one of the largest transfers of wealth we've seen in recent history in his first administration and do it once again for the very Americans who have had enough," he stated.

Earlier, Trump had labelled him a "Communist Lunatic" and vowed to prevent him from "destroying" the city.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump declared that he holds all the "levers" and "cards" in order to prevent Mamdani "destroy" New York.

"As President of the United States, I'm not going to let this Communist Lunatic destroy New York. Rest assured, I hold all the levers and have all the cards. I'll save New York City and make it 'Hot' and 'Great' again, just like I did with the Good Ol' USA!" he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump also threatened to have Mamdani deported if he blocks Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in New York.

Mamdani is a New York State Assembly member and a democratic socialist, born in Uganda.

He is the first South Asian man to serve in the New York State Assembly, the first Ugandan, and the only third Muslim ever to be a member of the body. He was born to Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Indo-Ugandan professor Mahmood Mamdani.
