New Jersey: A 24-year-old Indian woman has gone missing in New Jersey just days after arriving in the United States for a reported arranged marriage. Identified as Simran, she was last seen on June 20 near Lindenwold, shortly after deboarding a flight from India.
According to reports, the police said that she was captured on surveillance footage checking her phone and waiting calmly outside the terminal. However, there were no signs of distress.
No Relatives, No Language Support
Authorities are grappling with a complex case, as Simran reportedly has no known family members in the United States and does not speak English. Her only mode of communication was an international phone that works exclusively on Wi-Fi, making it harder for law enforcement to trace her movements.
"At this time, there are no known family members in India to contact to obtain information on her possible whereabouts," Lindenwold Police said in a statement on Thursday, June 26, according to Patch News.
The missing person report was filed five days after her arrival, raising further concerns about the gap in response time and possible missed leads.
Arranged Marriage or Pretext for Entry?
Investigators are also looking into whether the arranged marriage narrative was legitimate or a cover for a different motive. According to The New York Post, authorities are exploring the possibility that the marriage story was fabricated to secure free travel to the United States.
Simran is described as being five feet four inches tall, weighing around 150 pounds (68 kilograms), and has a small scar on the left side of her forehead. She was last seen wearing grey sweatpants, a white T-shirt, black flip-flops, and small diamond-studded earrings.
Lindenwold Police have urged anyone with information about her to contact Detective Joe Tomasetti as the investigation continues into her unexplained disappearance.
