UIDAI Deactivates Aadhaar Of Over 1.17 Crore Deceased People To Prevent Identity Misuse

In a bid to enhance India’s digital identity infrastructure, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated over 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers belonging to deceased individuals. The move is aimed at maintaining the accuracy of the Aadhaar database and preventing potential misuse of identities after death.

UIDAI carried out this deactivation after receiving approximately 1.55 crore death records from 24 States and Union Territories through the Civil Registration System (CRS), maintained by the Registrar General of India (RGI). After due validation of these records, the Aadhaar numbers were systematically deactivated.

A similar process is ongoing in non-CRS States and UTs, from where about 6.7 lakh additional death records have been received so far. Deactivation of Aadhaar numbers in these cases is currently underway.

To enable citizens to report such cases directly, UIDAI has launched a self-service facility titled “Reporting of Death of a Family Member” on the myAadhaar portal. Available since June, the service allows users to report a family member’s death by submitting their Aadhaar number, the Death Registration Number, and other required demographic details, following self-authentication. The facility currently supports 24 CRS-integrated States/UTs, with integration for remaining regions in progress.

Further measures include exploring partnerships with banks and Aadhaar-linked entities to source death data, and working with State governments to identify centenarian Aadhaar holders—those aged over 100 years—for verification and possible deactivation if deceased.

UIDAI has advised citizens to report the deaths of family members on the myAadhaar portal after obtaining a valid death certificate from the registering authorities, in order to avoid any unauthorised use of the Aadhaar number posthumously.

These proactive steps reflect UIDAI’s ongoing efforts to keep the Aadhaar database current, secure, and free of inactive identities.
