In a heated exchange on social media, X CEO Elon Musk told Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella that "OpenAI is going to eat Microsoft alive," shortly after Nadella unveiled the official launch of ChatGPT-5 across Microsoft’s key platforms.
Nadella had announced that the latest model from OpenAI, ChatGPT-5, is now integrated into Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, and Copilot for web. Calling it the 'most capable model yet,' Nadella reflected on how far AI innovation has come in just two and a half years since ChatGPT-4 was introduced in Bing.
Elon Musk, who has had a contentious history with OpenAI, reacted sharply to the announcement with his prediction about OpenAI’s dominance. To be exact, Musk reploed to Nadella saying, "OpenAI is going to eat Microsoft alive."
However, Nadella responded with a composed and forward-looking remark, stating, "People have been trying for 50 years and that’s the fun of it! Each day you learn something new, and innovate, partner, and compete. Excited for Grok 4 on Azure and looking forward to Grok 5!"
The exchange comes at a time when both OpenAI and Musk’s xAI are rapidly advancing in generative AI, with Microsoft standing at the center of both competition and collaboration through its strategic partnership with OpenAI and cloud support for xAI’s Grok models.
Musk sats that Grok 5 will be 'crushingly good' and says that it will roll out by the end of this year. To recall, Grok 4 was released just last month, hinting at half yearly updates from the xAI moving forwards
ChatGPT-5 was rolled out last night and has been made available for free. OpenAI claims that ChatGPT-5 is 'smarter,' offers better reasoning, better memory, and a more natural user experience.
