The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail of double Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, the prime accused in the murder of junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar. The top court has also asked him to surrender himself within a week.
Back in March, Sushil Kumar was granted bail by the Delhi High Court. Justice Sanjeev Narula granted regular bail on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the like amount. He was also granted seven days interim bail for Knee surgery in July 2023.
Advocate Joshini Tuli, counsel for the complainant in the wrestler Sushil Kumar case, in her statement to ANI said, "Today the bail granted to Sushil Kumar was set aside because it was an erroneous order and that is why the High Court's order has been set aside today in an appeal by the victims' father, Ashok Dhankar."
"We challenged that order on the grounds that it was an erroneous order. It was not correct as per law because Sushil Kumar had tampered with witnesses whenever he was granted interim bail, and the main star witness had supported the case, and there was video footage of the incident, which is why this appeal was allowed today."
She added,"Whenever Sushil Kumar came out on interim bail, he tampered with all the public witnesses, including injured witnesses, and that is why all of them turned hostile before the trial court, and the trial is still going on. There are many public witnesses left to be examined before the trial court"
