Spain made history on Sunday as they beat England 1-0 in the Women's World Cup final to clinch their maiden FIFA title at the Accor Stadium in Sydney.
Captain Olga Carmona led from the front as she struck in the 29th minute to put Spain ahead and it proved enough to hand Spain their first-ever World Cup in women's football.
At 23 years old, Carmona became the youngest Women's World Cup final goalscorer since Alex Morgan in 2011. She is also the second-youngest captain in the tournament's history.
For England, the wait for a FIFA title continues with their last World Cup trophy coming in 1996 which was won by the men's team at the Wembley Stadium after they defeated West Germany in the final in London.
Spain's Salma Paralluelo bagged the FIFA Best Young Player award after the match for being a revelation for the La Roja in the tournament while England goalkeeper Mary Earps won the Golden Glove for conceding only four goals across seven matches.
The Spanish team ended their campaign as the highest goalscorers in the tournament with 18.
They also became just the second team to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup after suffering a defeat on their way to winning the competition.
Having won the FIFA U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cup last year, Spain have become the first nation to hold all three global titles simultaneously.
Salma Paralluelo is the first player to win all three of these FIFA competitions.
