The Yorkshire batter finished day one of the fixture unbeaten on 99 as England finished with their noses ahead at 251/4. The former England captain had also broken a handful of records on day one, including passing 3000 Test runs against India and the second behind Ricky Ponting to cross 1700 runs against India at home. Additionally, he also became the leading run-getter at Lord's across formats with 2526 runs in 33 games.

With 37 tons now, the 34-year-old is the active player with most Test tons.
