In a dramatic T20I clash on Monday, June 16 Nepal and Netherlands produced one of the most memorable matches in cricketing history which was being played at the Titwood Cricket Ground in Glasgow, Scotland. In only the second fixture of the tournament both teams played out three super overs to register a result.
Batting first, the Netherlands set a target of 152 runs. Nepal equalled the score on the final ball of the innings, thanks to a boundary from Nandan Yadav. The dramatic tie set the stage for a first of the three Super Over.
First Super Over: Deadlock Continues
Nepal batted first and posted 19 runs on the board. The Netherlands responded with Max O’Dowd smashing a six and a four on the last two deliveries, levelling the scores again and sending the contest into a second Super Over. This was only the second such occurrence in men’s international cricket. The first had taken place during the India vs Afghanistan T20I in January 2024 at Bengaluru.
Second Super Over: Still No Winner
In the second Super Over, the Netherlands scored 17 runs. Nepal, fought back as Dipendra Singh Airee hit a six on the final delivery to once again level the scores.
Third Super Over: History Made
For the first time in the history of professional cricket across all formats, including ODIs, T20Is, domestic T20S, and List A matches a third Super Over was required to determine a winner. The final tiebreaker turned out to be an anticlimax. Nepal lost both of their wickets without scoring a run. Michael Levitt then sealed the victory for the Netherlands with a six off the first delivery, finally bringing an end to the epic contest.
Has there been any triple super over so far in cricket history?
A similar scenario happened in a 2023 Maharaja T20 League match between Hubli Tigers and Bengaluru Blasters at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium; however, that match was not an ICC-recognised fixture. Hence, Monday’s Nepal-Netherlands match stands as the first officially recorded instance of a triple Super Over in any recognised international game.
