In an astonishing finale at the Moto2 race during the GoPro Grand Prix of Aragon, Deniz Oncu of Red Bull KTM Ajo claimed his maiden Moto2 victory, outpacing Diogo Moreira (Italtrans Racing Team) by a razor-thin margin of just 0.003 seconds. It stands as one of the closest finishes in Grand Prix history, only bettered once in MotoGP.
From the drop of the flag, both riders battled fiercely. Moreira, starting from pole, gained the holeshot but lost the lead soon after. Oncu, having trailed early behind Barry Baltus, asserted control mid-race by taking the lead and setting a blistering pace. Yet Moreira rallied, launching a late charge.
With two laps remaining, the pair swapped the lead, setting up a showdown down the final straight. With Oncu on the outside line through the final turn, they even made light contact, and it was Oncu who managed the superior exit, stealing victory by mere millimeters at the line.
MotoGP: Joan Mir Walks Away Unhurt After High-Speed Crash Ahead Of Aragon GP Qualifying; Video
Honda HRC Castrol rider Joan Mir experienced a crash at Turn 2 of the Ciudad del Motor de Aragon circuit in Spain during the free practice session for the Aragon Grand Prix. The incident occurred as Mir was navigating the early stages of the session, leading to a temporary halt in proceedings while marshals ensured the track was safe for continuation.
Mir was able to walk away from the crash unaided, and initial assessments suggest that he did not sustain any serious injuries. This crash adds to a challenging season for the 2020 MotoGP World Champion, who has faced multiple setbacks, including a recent incident at the French Grand Prix where he suffered a fracture to his right hand following a collision with Francesco Bagnaia. Despite these hurdles, Mir has shown resilience, aiming to capitalize on circuits like Aragon, where he has previously enjoyed success.
The Aragon Grand Prix has historically been a favorable track for Honda riders, with the manufacturer securing multiple victories since the circuit's introduction to the MotoGP calendar in 2010. Mir's familiarity with the track and past performances had set expectations for a strong showing this weekend.
