It was a game of luck and buttery fingers where Mumbai Indians sailed past Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets at Wankhede stadium on Thursday, April 17. Chasing 163 runs for victory, the men in blue reached the target with 11 balls to spare.
The chase began with Rohit Sharma, making a sluggish start. However, he soon found his rhythm and hit three towering sixes. Despite the start, Rohit failed to make a big score as he was dismissed for 26 (16). Will Jacks had an early reprieve when Head dropped him on 4 off Shami’s bowling, and went on to build a 24-run partnership with Rickleton.
The sixth over saw another twist when Zeeshan Ansari who was bowling his first over of the match had Rickleton in trouble with three dot balls before getting him caught by Cummins. However, wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen was found guilty with his gloves ahead of the stumps, resulting in a no-ball. Rickleton, already walking back, returned to the crease and punished Harshal Patel with consecutive boundaries, before eventually falling for 31 with Head again taking the catch.
Jacks then joined forces with Suryakumar Yadav, and the duo added 52 runs off just 27 balls, rotating strike smoothly. But Cummins struck again, removing SKY for 26 (15), and later sent Jacks back for 36, halting MI’s momentum. However Tilak Verma and Hardik Pandya took the team past the finish line.
Although Cummins produced a lion-hearted performance with a haul of 4-0-26-3, he couldn't quite get the required support from the other bowlers. The only other wicket-takers were Eshan Malinga and Harshal Patel. Malinga got rid of Pandya and Naman Dhir, while Harshal removed Rickelton.
Mumbai Indians' bowlers utilize the sluggish conditions well after Hardik Pandya won the toss
After being asked to bat first by Hardik Pandya, Mumbai Indians bowlers kept things tight in the powerplay, restricting Sunrisers Hyderabad to just 46 runs. SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were riding their luck as MI fielders failed to grab 50-50 chances.
Despite that, the Head and Abhishek couldn't quite use it to full effect, failing to reach even fifty runs. They had notably failed to clear the fence even once in the first 10 overs. The SunRisers did find plenty of momentum in the last few overs and Cummins finished off the innings with a six to get their side to 162.
