South African and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer Lungi Ngidi explained the meaning and pronunciation behind his name amid IPL 2025. The 29-year-old hilariously claimed that he knows the initial part of his first name is an attire worn in India and hopes to get one for himself soon as well.
Ngidi, who was bought by the Royal Challengers for his base price of ₹1 crore, has played only one match in IPL 2025 which came against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, the Proteas speedster played an instrumental role in their thrilling victory, taking figures of 30/3, including two in the same over.
In the video uploaded by RCB, here's what Ngidi said about his name:
"Hi guys, my name is Lungi Ngidi. I’ve heard lot of it pronounce it as Negidi. But I want to clarify it’s Ngidi. It doesn’t mean cold. My full name is Lungisani that means ‘Fix it’ and Ngidi is ‘A lock’. I have no idea why they put those two together but that’s pretty much my name. I know that is an attire that is worn in India and hopefully, one day, I will get one for myself. But for me, if my full name is cut in half and that’s how I got Lungi. But I realized it means something different here."
RCB confident ahead of facing Lucknow Super Giants on Friday
Meanwhile, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru are mighty high on confidence and have one foot in the playoffs, having conjured eight victories in 11 matches. With all their departments clicking and some of the luck going their way, the Royal Challengers can seal a playoff spot should they beat the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 9, Friday.
The Super Giants are likely to miss out on a playoff spot for the second consecutive occasion as they have five wins in 11 matches this season. While Rishabh Pant's poor form with the bat has arguably one of the Super Giants' chief factors behind their underwhelming show, their bowling plans have also gone awry in multiple games, leaving their batting line-up to get too many runs. With three more games left and not much hope to reach the playoffs, the onus will be on the Super Giants to see what they can conjure ahead of the next season.
