Team India skipper Shubman Gill has registered yet another record by going past Sunil Gavaskar's tally of 732 runs by an Indian captain in a single Test series. By crossing the former Indian opener's tally, Gill now sits at the top for Indian captains with most runs in a series, doing so on Day 1 of the fifth Test against England.
Gavaskar had registered a staggering 732 runs in what was a quality display against a vintage West Indies' bowling attack in the 1971 series at home. The 125-Test veteran had aggregated 732 runs at 91.50 alongside four centuries as India won the six-Test rubber by 1-0. Gill is also on track to breaking Gavaskar's record of most runs in a series by an Indian as the latter had aggregated 774.
As far as captaincy numbers go, Virat Kohli features thrice in the list for most runs by an Indian skipper in a series. Kohli, who lead India in 68 Tests, had aggregated 593 runs against England in 2018, 655 against India in 2016 and 610 vs Sri Lanka in 2017/18.
Team India reach 72/2 at lunch on Day 1 at The Oval
Meanwhile, England opted to bowl first on a muggy morning at The Oval in London, especially with the seaming pitch also on offer. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) and KL Rahul (14) departed cheaply, B Sai Sudharsan (25*) and Shubman Gill (15*) have done well to propel Team India to 72/2 in the 23 overs bowled before lunch.
India (Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill(c), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel(w), Washington Sundar, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj.
England (Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope(c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue.
