ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Mitchell Starc Withdraws Due To Personal Reason, Steve Smith Named Captain

In a shocking twist, just days before the Champions Trophy 2025, Mitchell Starc pulled out of the tournament for personal reasons, leaving Australia scrambling for reinforcements. The pace spearhead, will not be part of the campaign in Pakistan and the UAE, dealing a massive blow to the five-time champions.

According to Cricket Australia, Starc, has chosen to remain silent on his decision, requesting privacy during this time. However, reports suggest that the veteran pacer appeared to be struggling with a left ankle issue during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, raising concerns about his fitness.

Already reeling from the injuries to Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh, along with Marcus Stoinis' retirement, Australia now finds itself without its entire frontline fast-bowling attack.

Australia’s senior men’s team chief selector George Bailey said, “We understand and respect Mitch’s decision. Mitch is deeply respected for his commitment to international cricket and the priority he places on performing for Australia."

He added, “His well-documented ability to play through pain and adversity, as well as forgoing opportunities in other parts of his career to put his country first, should be applauded. His loss is, of course, a blow for the Champions Trophy campaign but does provide an opportunity for someone else to make a mark on the tournament,".
