Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota's tragic death at the age of 28 has sent shockwaves across the sporting fraternity. Having played with the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo as well, fans have left comments of tribute on Porto-born footballer's last post on his official Instagram account and expressed their grief.

The car accident that caused Jota's demise took place in Spain at 12.30am local time on the A-52 motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. His 26-year-old brother Andre Silva also lost his life. The tragic incident took place as the car left the road and caught fire following a tire burst while overtaking another vehicle.

His last social media post was of his wedding with Rute Cardoso and captioned it "A day we will never forget."

Liverpool club announced an official statement following the forward player's demise, stressing the need to provide full support to Jota's friends and family.

"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, team-mates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support."
