Veteran Koneru Humpy and teen sensation Divya Deshmukh faced off one another in the final of FIDE Women’s World Cup Final on Saturday, July 26 and it concluded on July 28. This will be the first time that two indians will be fighting for the title. Deshmukh was eventually crowned champion and took home $50,000 (Rs 41.6 lakh).

Humpy, the veteran and current World No. 5, remains India's highest-ranked female player. Deshmukh, on the other hand, has made headlines as the youngest Indian to qualify for the Candidates in over three decades

The crown will also bring in huge amount of money. So how much does the winner and runner-up take from the event?

The winner of the FIDE Women’s World Cup final will take home $50,000 (Rs 41.6 lakh), while the runner-up will receive $35,000 (Rs 29.1 lakh).

Divya and Humpy qualify for Women’s Candidates event

Besides the title and prize money, both Divya and Humpy are also assured of spots in the Women’s Candidates next year. The winner of the Women’s Candidates will challenge Ju Wenjun of China for the world championship. The winner of the all-Chinese third-place playoff between Lei and Tan will also qualify for the Candidates.

How did Koneru Humpy & Divya Deshmukh qualify for FIDE Women’s World Cup Final?

International Master Divya reached the summit clash by defeating higher-ranked Tan Zhongyi of China 1.5-0.5 and becoming the first ever Indian to reach the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup.

On the other hand Koneru Humpy was forced by Top seed Lei Tingjie into the tiebreaks in the semi-finals, but the 38-year-old Indian Grandmaster defeated her Chinese opponent 5-3 to enter the final.

What happens if Divya loses the final against Humpy?

Divya, currently rated 2476.2 (ahead of the final) on the live rating list, has already secured one GM norm by virtue of reaching the final of the FIDE Women’s World Cup. If she loses the final against her compatriot Humpy, she will still need to cross the 2500 rating mark. After reaching the required rating, she will need two more GM norms to officially earn the Grandmaster title.
