Team India suffered a major scare ahead of the opening test against England at Headingly. Karun Nair, who is making his comeback to the Indian team, was struck by a delivery on the ribs by Prasidh Krishna. Krishna immediately walked up to Nair to see if he is doing fine. The batter walked up to the physio and his teammates, showing the mark ball left on his body before he resuming his batting.

Nair is expected to play in the match, his first since 2017. The right-handed middle-order batter, who fell out of favour with the selectors despite scoring a triple century. However, after scoring tons of runs in domestic cricket, he found a spot in the squad for the England Tests.
After getting picked in the Test squad, Nair did well for India A on English soil. Against England Lions, he scored 204 in Canterbury. In the second unofficial Test played in Northampton, Nair registered scores of 40 and 15.

Nair made his Test debut for India in 2016. He became just second Indian batter to score a triple century in Tests. Before getting dropped, he scored 374 runs from six Tests with the last series coming against Australia in 2017 at home. He had scored 54 runs from four innings. He now returns to the Indian team after more than eight years.
