David de Gea took a cheeky jibe at former teammate Bruno Fernandes ahead of a much-anticipated reunion at Old Trafford this weekend when Manchester United hosts Fiorentina. De Gea left United in the summer of 2023 upon the expiry of his contract. Throughout the season, the goalkeeper was locked in talks with the club over a new deal, but then-manager Erik ten Hag eventually opted to get rid of him.
In a video message shared ahead of the match, De Gea responded to Fernandes' comment about wanting to "score some goals" against him with some trademark dry humour.
He began, “Hello. As you know, I'm coming back to your home. For sure, it's going to be a special game for me. Bruno, you cannot score against me and if you do, it’s only because I let you score, so people will keep singing your name!”
With a smirk, he added, “No, but obviously, I can't wait to see you, my friend. I can't wait to see you all at Old Trafford… so, I'll be there on Saturday. See you soon.”
De Gea had an impressive debut season in Italy. The 34-year-old delivered several standout performances for the Serie A side, notably in Europe, where they made the Europa Conference League semi-finals - ultimately losing to Real Betis over two legs.
David de Gea's journey at Manchester United
The Spanish goalkeeper left Manchester United in 2023 after spending 12 years and making 545 appearances in total. His 415 Premier League appearances - the seventh most of any goalkeeper in Premier League history - have seen him concede 446 goals in the process.De Gea is one of only six keepers to win the Premier League Golden Glove more than once - with his two putting him alongside Allison.
Only three goalkeepers have ever kept more Premier League clean sheets than De Gea's 147 - Petr Cech with 202, David James with 169 and Mark Schwarzer with 151.
De Gea to be honoured at Old Trafford
Fans will have an opportunity to pay tribute to De Gea on his first return to M16. Pre-match, Bruno will make a presentation to his old team-mate to recognise De Gea's contribution to the club.
