Buttler took over from Eoin Morgan in June 2022 and led England to victory in the T20 World Cup later that year. Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s white-ball captain after their early exit from the Champions Trophy. He announced on Friday that he will lead the team one last time against South Africa in Karachi.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Buttler said, "I'm going to stand down as England captain. It’s the right decision for me and the team." He hopes a new leader, alongside coach Brendon McCullum, can take England forward.
Despite stepping down as captain, Buttler will continue playing for England. He admitted feeling "sadness and disappointment" but looks forward to enjoying his cricket again.
Jos Buttler's performance as captain
Buttler took over from Eoin Morgan in June 2022 and led England to victory in the T20 World Cup later that year. However, England’s form has declined since then, with poor performances in three consecutive ICC tournaments the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Jos Buttler led England in 36 ODIs, losing 22, and in 46 T20Is, losing 23. After England’s narrow loss to Afghanistan, Buttler hinted at his resignation, saying he needed to assess whether he was "part of the problem or the solution."
Earlier in 2025, England suffered heavy defeats, losing 0-3 in an ODI series and 1-4 in a T20I series against India. Despite these setbacks, they remained hopeful for a strong performance in the Champions Trophy. However, the tournament proved to be a tough reality check for them.
