'Armageddons Will Be Fun': D Gukesh On Facing Magnus Carlsen At Norway Chess 2025

After winning the World Chess Championship in Singapore recently, D Gukesh is now eager to take on Magnus Carlsen in the Norway Chess tournament next year. The prestigious tournament is set to take place from May 26 to June 6 and promises one of the most highly anticipated matchups in chess history between Carlsen and the newly-crowned champion.
Speaking about facing Carlsen, Gukesh said, “I’m excited to face the strongest players in the world again in Norway and also the Armageddons will be fun,". Speaking about the preparation he added, “I’ll prepare as I usually do and try to be the best version of myself in every way." In 2023, Gukesh finished third in Stavanger.

Gukesh has achieved remarkable success this year. It all started with winning the Tata Steel Masters after which he lead India to gold at the Chess Olympiad. He became the youngest winner of the Candidates Tournament before claiming the ultimate prize in classical chess: the World Championship title.
Gukesh broke the record of Garry Kasparov, who held the record of becoming the youngest world chess champion, accomplishing when he was 22. the 18-year-old revealed after his win that seeing Vishwanathan Anand lose to the sensational Magnus Carlsen in 2013 inspired him to bring the title to India.
"In 2013, during the Chess World Championship in Chennai, I looked at Vishy Sir and Magnus and thought it would be really cool to be there one day. To actually sit there and see the Indian flag next to me was probably the best moment of my life. When Magnus won, I thought, 'I really want to be the one to bring the title back to India.'"
