Mythological story
The vrat commemorates the legendary tale of Savitri and Satyavan. According to legends, Savitri’s devotion and determination compelled Yama, the god of death, to restore her husband’s life. This story is symbol of love, loyalty, and spiritual strength.
Puja Vidhi
On this day, women should wake up and take bath early and wear red or yellow sarees. The puja involves tying sacred threads around a banyan tree (Vat Vriksha), offering prayers and sweets, and performing parikrama (circumambulation) around the tree. Women should listen to the Vat Savitri Katha and observe a fast, often without water, to express devotion and gratitude.
