Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services provider, has announced plans to lay off approximately 2% of its global workforce—about 12,261 employees—this year. The layoffs will primarily affect employees in middle and senior roles, as the company restructures to align with its evolving business model.
As of June 30, 2025, TCS reported a total headcount of 6,13,069 employees, with a net addition of 5,000 during the April–June quarter. Despite this increase, the company is pushing forward with strategic workforce reshaping.

According to an official statement, TCS said the layoffs are part of its broader transformation into a “future-ready” organization. This transformation includes significant investment in emerging technologies, widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), expansion into new global markets, deepening of key partnerships, and revamping its infrastructure and operating model.
“To prepare for the future, we are implementing several strategic initiatives,” the company stated. “These include entering new markets, integrating AI across operations, investing in next-generation technology, and realigning our workforce to meet evolving client and business demands.”
TCS emphasized that while many employees are being reskilled or redeployed, certain roles—particularly those where redeployment is not feasible—will be phased out as part of this process. The impacted employees will be provided with benefits, counseling, outplacement assistance, and other forms of support to aid their transition.
What This Means for Techies in Pune
According to hiring industry experts, mid- and senior-level professionals in Pune are particularly vulnerable to the current TCS workforce restructuring, as these levels are directly in line with the company's stated layoff targets. Recruitment consultants note that Pune’s IT ecosystem—dominated by service-based firms—offers limited redeployment or lateral hiring options for such experienced talent.
Experts also warn that TCS’s strict 35-day deployment policy further increases pressure on benched employees. “If someone doesn't get placed on a project within the time limit, they’re automatically flagged for review,” said a senior IT recruiter familiar with the policy implementation.
Moreover, equivalent opportunities for mid-career professionals in Pune remain scarce, as the bulk of strategic hiring at these levels is currently happening in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad. While product-based companies offer more sustainable long-term roles, their presence in Pune is still relatively limited, making them harder to access for transitioning tech professionals.
