Pune’s Kalyani Nagar Turns Into Mosquito Hotspot; Residents Slam PMC Over Negligence, Demand Urgent Action Before Outbreak |
The residents of Kalyani Nagar claim that it’s disheartening that in a city like Pune, known for its growing infrastructure and smart city tag, basic civic issues still require repeated reminders. The stretch near Bounty Sizzlers, North Avenue, Kalyani Nagar close to Landmark Garden Society has turned into a mosquito breeding hotspot due to gross civic negligence.
Monika Sharma, a resident of Kalyani Nagar, highlighted that, “A large pothole near the U-turn has been left unfilled for months—not because of lack of resources, but because the road remains uneven and improperly leveled, making it impossible to fix the pothole without proper groundwork. More disturbingly, filthy waste from drainage cleaning was left open in the area. It lies scattered on the roadside, unattended, stinking, and attracting pests. This stagnant water, mixed with sludge and garbage, has become the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes just as the monsoon begins.”
“Last year, several residents, including children, suffered from mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and chikungunya. Despite repeated complaints, PMC has failed to act. This area remains a major health risk, especially for young children who are more vulnerable to infections. Why does PMC need repeated reminders to act on something so serious? Public health is not a seasonal priority,” Sharma added.
Residents seek action
Munir Vastani, a father of an 8‑year‑old child, said, “Being a father, I am really concerned about these kinds of breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Since it's the rainy season, water does not dry and creates a perfect environment for mosquitoes to breed, which leads to all kinds of diseases, as we know. The drains should be cleaned and the area around it should be cleared of water. PMC should make sure about this. Requesting PMC to maintain utmost hygiene in this case.”
Aaditya Patil, another resident of Kalyani Nagar, said, “As a resident of Kalyani Nagar, it’s deeply concerning to see how basic civic negligence is putting our health at risk. The stagnant water and open waste near Bounty Sizzlers are not isolated cases — similar conditions exist in multiple pockets across Kalyani Nagar, turning the entire area into a mosquito breeding zone. With monsoon here, this neglect becomes even more dangerous. Children and elderly residents are particularly vulnerable, and we’ve already seen the consequences with last year’s rise in dengue and chikungunya cases. This isn’t just about bad roads — it’s about public health and systemic inaction. We expect better from our city authorities and refuse to stay silent anymore.”
The residents demand:
Immediate refilling of the pothole and proper leveling of the road
Sanitation of the area and immediate removal of the exposed drainage waste
Regular fumigation and mosquito-control measures
Permanent preventive planning, not just reactive cleanup
The PMC health department said, "During monsoons, the stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for almost all kinds of mosquitoes that carry diseases like malaria to chikungunya. Therefore, citizens should maintain hygiene in and around their homes. The corporation has cautioned that any delay in taking preventive measures will result in strict action. If mosquitoes are found breeding in water reservoirs located on residential or commercial premises, legal action will be initiated against them."
The PMC has urged all citizens to inspect their premises, eliminate stagnant water sources, and cooperate with health inspectors during routine checks.
