With the onset of the monsoon, many youngsters from Pune and nearby areas must be eager to trek to the historic Sinhagad Fort. However, they will have to wait a little longer, as the fort is currently closed to the public until June 2 due to an anti-encroachment drive being conducted by the state forest department.

Along with the forest department, teams from the Pune District Collector’s office, Pune Rural Police, Revenue Department, Archaeology Department, Panchayat Samiti and Public Works Department are involved in the action to remove unauthorised structures at the fort.

This comes in the wake of the Maharashtra government resolution passed on January 20, 2025, mandating the removal of all encroachments from forts across the state.

The anti-encroachment drive began at Sinhagad Fort on May 29. Earlier, notices had been issued to the parties responsible for the illegal constructions, asking them to clear the encroachments.

Meanwhile, officials are facing a tough time removing the encroachments manually, as it is not possible to use heavy machinery at the fort.
