Umakant Dash, the Director of the Institute of Rural Management, Anand, has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune.
The position of VC at GIPE had been vacant since Ajit Ranade’s resignation. At present, Shankar Das is officiating as the interim VC of the institute.

Dash completed his B.A. from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, in 1990 and M.A. in Economics from the Central University, Hyderabad, in 1992.
He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Applied Economics from IIT Kanpur in 1996.
He was a Visiting Associate Professor at Universiti Utara Malaysia from 2011–2012.
He joined IIT Madras in March 2009 as an Associate Professor and rose to the position of Professor in July 2014.

In 2021, Dash was appointed as the Director of the country’s premier rural management institute – the Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA).
He specialises in the areas of Financial Economics, Health Policy Analysis, Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes, and Inter-industry Analysis.
