A harrowing incident of gang rape occurred in the jurisdiction of Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station in Pune, the police said on Monday. Two accused have been arrested so far, while the search for two others is going on, they added.

According to the police, the incident took place on Friday (January 3). The crime was allegedly facilitated by the victim's friend, who invited her to her home under false pretences. The accused have been identified as Bharat Rohidas Gavhane (28) and Sumona Bharat Gavhane alias Sumona Noor Islam Shaikh (24), both residents of Wadgaon, Sinhagad Road and two others.



According to the police, the victim is a resident of Mumbai. Her accused female friend resided near Navale Bridge. She called her to Pune on January 3 at her residence. All three male accused were already at her home. The accused then sexually assaulted the victim one by one while threatening to kill her if she opposed and informed the police.

The victim later reported the incident to the Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station.

Dashrath Patil, Senior Police Inspector, Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station, said, "The victim and the female accused are friends. Accused Sumona called her at home to stay. A total of four accused have been identified in the case including three men and one woman. The police have arrested her friend Sumona and one of the accused Rohidas while the search for the other two suspects continues. Further investigation is underway."



Rahul Aware, Assistant Commissioner of Police, speaking to The Free Press Journal said, "The victim has been sent for medical examination. Two accused have been arrested. Police are investigating the matter so the other two will be arrested soon. Regarding the matter, a case has been registered under Section 376 (D) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita."
