Pune recorded its hottest January in a decade this year, with an average maximum temperature of 31.56 degrees Celsius, according to data shared by Vineet Kumar, a Research Scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, on X (formerly Twitter). Kumar added that the average minimum temperature was 13.89 degrees Celsius in January, which is the second highest in a decade after 2021.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that Maharashtra will likely experience above-normal temperatures in February and that the winter is all but over. "Northerly cool winds play a crucial role in winter temperature in Maharashtra. This year, except for a few days in November and December, there was no strong impact of Northerly winds in Maharashtra. Hence, the state experienced relatively fewer cold days this winter season," said SD Sanap, senior meteorologist from IMD, Pune.

Speaking about the forecast for the first week of February for Pune City, Sanap said, "In Pune, both minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal levels at least till February 5."
