In a bid to streamline Pune City Traffic and crack down on violations, the Pune Traffic Department has introduced AI-powered patrolling and e-challan vehicles on a trial basis.
These special vehicles, equipped with advanced surveillance cameras on the front, left, and right sides, can detect traffic rule violations in real time and automatically issue e-challans directly to the offender’s mobile phone.
In the initial stage, this vehicle will patrol on Jangli Maharaj Road (JM Road) and Fergusson College Road (FC Road).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav, speaking about the vehicle, said, “AI camera-based surveillance-cum-e-challan vehicles are ready to run on the road. These AI cameras have been set up on the left, right, and front sides of the vehicle.
"The advantage of this vehicle is that during patrolling, it can generate e-challans on the phone for vehicles violating traffic norms. Almost 80 to 90 percent of people follow the traffic norms, but the rest do not care about the rules and regulations, leading to slow traffic flow, congestion, and jams on various roads across the city,” said DCP Jadhav

For such vehicles, automatic e-challans should be generated; accordingly, the CCTV-based police van has been launched. In the initial stage, the vehicle has been deployed on JM Road and FC Road on a trial basis. However, after getting the response, other roads will be inspected soon.
