Residents of Dhayari staged a protest on April 17, demanding the removal of the garbage depot from their locality, citing serious health hazards posed due to it. The garbage processing unit is located near a densely populated area at Pari Company on Sinhagad Road, which recently made the news after a major fire incident.
The garbage unit has the capacity to handle 50 tonnes of mixed waste per day. However, the plant is located within the residential locality. Hence, it is causing problems for the residents.

Social activist Dhananjay Benkar raised concerns and said, "The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is to be blamed for allowing such a high-risk facility to operate in the residential zone. This land was earlier reserved for a public garden by PMC, but the civic body, instead of turning it into a garden, decided to make it a garbage depot. When we purchased the flats, we were promised that the DP road would make the connectivity better, but nothing has been done so far. The plant emits a foul smell and has led to an alarming increase in flies and mosquitoes, contributing to the spread of diseases. Many families have been forced to vacate their homes, and several residential plots in the area now lie abandoned. Residents are compelled to keep their doors and windows shut at all times, despite the rising temperatures."
Responding to the people's concerns, Baramati MP Supriya Sule visited the site on April 20 and reviewed the Dhayari garbage depot and assured people she would solve their issues. "A meeting with the PMC officials will be organised to discuss the relocation of the garbage processing unit and the completion of an unfinished DP road," Sule said.

Locals claim that a fire incident was reported at the unit recently. Though no one was injured in the mishap, it is not safe to have a processing unit near homes and residential buildings. Citizens are also facing issues like polluted water. The residents have warned of intensifying their protest if the civic body fails to act on their demands.
