A restaurant owner died after he was brutally beaten by three people with cricket stumps and bamboo sticks over an old property dispute, officials said on Monday. The incident occurred in the wee hours of Sunday at Santosh Nagar in Katraj, they added.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Shubham Subhash Chavan (26), a resident of the Om Sai Mitra Mandal area of Santosh Nagar, who owned a restaurant in the same area. Police said a man identified as Amar Sakore is the prime suspect in the murder.
"On Sunday morning around 4:30am, Chavan was going for some work and was passing through the Santosh Nagar area when Sakore and two other accused intercepted him. They started abusing and thrashing him. Chavan tried to escape, but the accused began hitting him with cricket stumps and bamboo sticks. Chavan was brutally injured. The accused left him bleeding on the road. Later, local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead," said the police.
Sharad Zine, Senior Police Inspector at Ambegaon Police Station, said, "Three suspects are involved in the crime. Two teams, each from the crime branch and the local police station, are probing the matter from all angles. The accused will be arrested soon."
