If the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is to be believed, Pune is well on its way to becoming one of the cleanest cities in the country. At least, this is what the figures of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department are revealing: zero persons were fined for feeding pigeons in June.

However, despite the PMC's warning against feeding pigeons, many bird lovers continue the practice. Experts claim that overfeeding pigeons has led to an increase in their population, and these birds also carry infectious and zoonotic organisms that pose potential health risks to humans.

Residents Say Reality On Ground Is Very Different

Ashok Mehendale, a resident of Raheja Society, said, “This is ironic that at every corner you can see people feeding pigeons, but still no action is being taken by the PMC, and the data shows their negligence as zero cases have been registered, but the reality is different. The population has increased, and it’s certainly going to impact the lives of the people.”

Members of the Sinhagad Road Area Development Action Committee, in collaboration with the Savarkar Sports Foundation, also raised serious concerns over individuals feeding pigeons in public spaces. The committee has requested strict legal action against those feeding the pigeons, as it risks the lives of the public.

Shruti Hada, a working professional, said, “Despite the ban on feeding pigeons, I have seen people feeding pigeons, especially at chowks and open spaces. The civic body identified 20 prominent pigeon-feeding spots, including the Sarasbaug statue, Bund Garden flyover, Patil Estate at Shivajinagar, and the Katraj Chowk. But still, they don’t take action."

"A review of studies and literature shows that the risk of pigeons spreading diseases to humans is extremely low. Serious diseases like bird flu and other zoonotic viruses are brought on by poorly kept poultry birds and farm animals genetically modified for meat in dirty conditions. Thus, the government needs to cease pursuing pigeons,” said a member of PETA India.

Sandeep Kadam, head of the Solid Waste Management Department, PMC, said, "We are ensuring the residents are abiding by the rules. We are putting out advertisements to create awareness and curb the practice of feeding the pigeons.”
