In good news for residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) has proposed a 41-km-long route from Nigdi to Chakan. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the same has been prepared.

Estimated cost and total stations:

As per the DPR, the estimated cost of this elevated metro route is Rs 10,383.89 crore, and it is proposed to have a total of 31 stations, including high-density areas like Wakad, Pimple Saudagar, and Bhosari.

Maximum speed:

The metro route will be named Bhakti Shakti–Wakad–Nashik Phata–Chakan and is set to run at a maximum speed of 80 km per hour.

Ridership:

It is expected to have a ridership of 3.38 lakh per day by 2031, which would increase to 7.81 lakh by 2061.

Connection to other metro lines:

Interestingly, skywalks have been proposed at Wakad and Sant Tukaramnagar for commuters who wish to take the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar line or the Swargate–Pimpri-Chinchwad line, respectively.

Depot at Bhosari:

A depot-cum-workshop has been proposed in Bhosari on land owned by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Joint land acquisition:

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Maharashtra government will jointly have to carry out land acquisition as the proposed route falls under the jurisdiction of PCMC and PMRDA.

Approvals awaited:

The proposal, after approval of the PCMC and PMRDA, will be forwarded to the state government for approval. It will be implemented only after a go-ahead by the Centre. Once approved by the Centre, this will be the longest route of Pune Metro. The previous longest route was the 31.63-km Khadakwasla–Kharadi route, which is set to be constructed at Rs 9,897 crore. Though it has got the approval of the state government, the Centre’s nod is awaited.
