Major Power Outage Hits Pune’s Hinjewadi & MIDC Areas: Over 52,000 Consumers Affected; Full Restoration May Take 3 Days

Pune’s major IT hub area, Hinjewadi, and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area faced a power cut on Sunday and Monday following a fault in an underground high-voltage cable. According to officials, it could take up to three days to repair the fault.

"The power cut has affected around 52 thousand consumers, and the fault is major as the 220 kV cable at the substation is damaged. Full repair will take at least three days," said Vikas Puri, Public Relations Officer, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).

According to officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL), the fault occurred at around 2:10 pm in the 220 kV Infosys–Pegasus underground cable. As of Sunday evening, the issue remained unresolved.

The MSETCL had shut down the power supply from 11 am to 1 pm on Sunday (July 6) for scheduled maintenance and repair work. While the maintenance and repair work were completed and the power supply resumed, a major fault occurred in the 220 kV Infosys to 220 kV Pegasus extra-high voltage underground power line at around 2:10 pm on Sunday. As a result, the power supply of 25 22 kV lines supplying power to MSEDCL customers, two extra-high voltage customers (Infosys and Nextra), including 91 high-voltage and more than 52 thousand low-voltage customers, was disrupted. This includes 20 thousand domestic and commercial low-voltage customers in the Pimpri division and 32 thousand in the Mulshi division.

“Power supply to 2,000 consumers started in the first phase at 10 pm on Sunday. Power supply to all low-voltage consumers was restored by 4 am on Monday. Power supply to the Kolte Patil Township was also resumed. Power supply to some industrial consumers was successfully resumed from this substation. However, due to high demand from 85 high-voltage and 2 extra-high-voltage consumers and no power load remaining elsewhere, MSEDCL will have to shut down the power supply to these consumers until further planning,” said MSEDCL Chief Engineer Sunil Kakade.

Affected areas:

Around 32,000 consumers in the areas of Exerbia Society, Kolte Patil Township, Marunji, Maan, Jambe, and Dattawadi in the Mulshi division were affected since Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, Hinjewadi MIDC, IT Park, part of Raisoni Park, Dohler Company, and Wipro Circle in the Pimpri division were also affected. Now, except for some industrial consumers, power supply to all residential areas has started through alternative means.
