Maharashtra Medical Council Elections 2025: Voting Set For April 3 In Pune

The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) is set to hold its elections on April 3, 2025, through direct voting. The polling stations will be located in Pune district civil hospitals and medical colleges, with the voting period scheduled from 8 AM to 5 PM. This year, 45 candidates have registered their interest, and each voter is eligible to vote for nine candidates.

Dr. Sunil Ingale, President of IMA Pune, emphasized the significance of the MMC in safeguarding the professional integrity of doctors while ensuring public welfare. The election results are expected to shape the future of medical governance in Maharashtra.

The MMC, a statutory body responsible for maintaining an up-to-date record of doctors registered under modern medicine, plays a crucial role in ensuring professional conduct within the medical community. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), a well-established NGO for medical professionals, has consistently secured all nine seats in the past two elections. The selection criteria for candidacy emphasize a candidate’s willingness to serve, time commitment, selflessness, contributions to the medical community, ethical standing, and societal reputation.

A significant concern highlighted in the election discussions is the growing trend of patient complaints against doctors, with some cases being misused against medical professionals. The MMC holds the legal authority to cancel a doctor’s registration, which can severely impact their career. This underscores the importance of having a strong and fair medical council to protect the interests of both patients and doctors.
