COVID-19 Cases On The Rise In Maharashtra: Pune Stands Second In Infections After Mumbai

As of 1 June 2, Maharashtra has 506 active COVID-19 patients, while 300 patients have successfully recovered. On Monday, 65 new cases were reported, with the highest numbers from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) which recorded 25 cases. Mumbai recorded 22 cases, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) recorded nine cases, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) recorded six cases, Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) recorded two cases and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) recorded one case.

While the number of Covid patients is increasing across the country, the numbers have also surged in Maharashtra. The active cases of COVID-19 patients have increased in the last week, and there has been a huge increase in infections in Mumbai, Pimpri-Chinchwad and other places. It has been reported that the most active patients in the state are now in Pune.

In the last 24 hours, 59 patients have been infected with COVID-19 in the state and out of the 59 patients, the maximum number of patients are from Mumbai, which recorded 20 positive cases and next to Mumbai is Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which recorded a total of 17 cases. According to the data, a total of 12,011 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the state since January 1, 2025.

Out of these, 873 people were found to be COVID-19 infected, out of which more than 369 patients have been discharged, while there are currently a total of 494 active COVID-19 patients in the state. Meanwhile, a woman from Kolhapur and a man from Vasai have died of COVID in the last week.

The health department has confirmed that all currently diagnosed cases are mild in severity. However, since January, a total of 10 COVID-related deaths have occurred. Of these, nine patients had significant comorbidities, including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, nephrotic syndrome, interstitial lung disease, and severe ARDS. One deceased patient was a 47-year-old woman presenting with fever and breathlessness.

The PMC health department has also released an advisory for the residents urging them to keep their environment clean to curb the infection. PMC's Health Officer, Dr. Nina Borade, emphasised the urgent need for action to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. “There has been a surge in cases of COVID-19. But the symptoms remain mild and there's nothing alarming or worrisome. I urge people not to panic."

However, the health department has come into alert mode in the wake of the increasing number of COVID-19 patients in the country. On Friday, Union Minister of State for Health and Life Sciences Prataprao Jadhav clarified that the centre is ready to deal with any situation. Jadhav also said that the government is monitoring the COVID situation.
