Mumbai: To streamline urban space management and ramp up revenue generation, the Western Railway (WR) has awarded its first parking cum-stacking contract in the Mumbai Central division at Bandra Terminus. The facility, located beneath the elevated road near the station, officially began operations on July 12.

The move was driven by strong local demand for organised parcel storage, particularly due to the site’s proximity to key wholesale and retail markets in Bandra and nearby commercial hubs. The facility offers both vehicle parking and storage space for goods.

Chief public relations officer of WR, Vineet Abhishek said, “Under the newly designed model, 10% of the area has been earmarked for dedicated parcel stacking zones. This allows for organised storage without affecting vehicular movement, ensuring that both commuters and logistics operators benefit. Storage fees will be calculated based on duration, weight, volume, and type of goods. Charges are subject to prior approval from WR and aligned with prevailing market dynamics. Easy access during working hours adds value for local traders and courier services”.

Awarded through e-tendering, the contract covers a total area of 3735.02sqm, with 3362.02sqm designated for vehicle parking and 373sqm for parcel stacking. The facility, now operational, will run until July 11, 2028, fetching the railways an impressive annual license fee of Rs1,52,31,313. This represents a 145.7% increase over the previous parking contract value of Rs62,00,674 per year.

Previously used solely as a pay and park facility, the site has now been transformed into a multi-functional utility hub. An official said, “The land under the elevated road was often misused or encroached upon. Now, with this structured contract, the space is secure, well-utilised, and clean”.

According to the WR, this initiative is expected to serve as a template for similar projects across the network. By integrating parking with commercial stacking, the railways are not only enhancing passenger convenience but also tapping into the untapped commercial potential of railway land.

“This is a really good idea – a win-win situation for everyone: passengers, local traders, and the railways,” said Sahabuddin Ansari, 45, a resident of Bandra.
