Thane Rains: 6 Houses Collapse Like Dominoes In Kalyan Amid Incessant Downpour; Dramatic Video Goes Viral |
Mumbai: A dramatic video from Thane's Kalyan, which is just 30 kilometres away from Mumbai, captured the moment five to six houses collapsed one after another in a shocking chain reaction, bringing attention to the precarious condition of structures weakened by relentless monsoon rains. The incident, which reportedly took place on Sunday, thankfully resulted in no casualties as residents were evacuated just in time.
According to officials, the collapse began with the lower section of one house giving way. In seconds, adjoining houses crumbled like a pack of cards, creating panic in the neighbourhood. These structures were already marked as dilapidated and had become dangerously unstable following continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days.
Residents Were Previously Moved Out Of Dangerous Structures
The local administration had been monitoring the area and on noticing signs of instability, swiftly moved the residents out. The timely evacuation is being credited for preventing a major tragedy. Authorities have since sealed off the affected zone and begun inspecting other nearby buildings to identify those at risk of collapse.
The video, which has gone viral on social media, has once again brought urban housing safety into the spotlight. Civic officials have reiterated their appeal to citizens living in old or vulnerable buildings to cooperate with evacuation and safety measures.
Man Killed In House Collapse Incident
In a separate but related incident, a 55-year-old man lost his life after his house collapsed in Alyani village, Shahapur taluka of Thane district. The deceased, identified as Dunda Malhari Nimse, was trapped under debris when his structure gave way amid strong winds and heavy rain early on July 26. Police have registered an accidental death report in the case.

Both incidents have raised alarms across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which has faced consistent rain-related challenges this monsoon. While Mumbai itself saw a brief respite from torrential downpours on Monday, the danger posed by weakened structures remains high.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any fresh weather alerts for Mumbai, Thane or Palghar as of Monday, but light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue.
