Thane: The Thane Police issued a scam alert via X post, warning citizens to be cautious while interacting with unknown women on social media and dating platforms on July 10. The alert highlights a growing cases of online fraud involving women who establish online relationships and then use explicit content to blackmail victims.
According to the Thane Police Commissionerate, these women initially gain the trust of victims by engaging in friendly conversations and expressing romantic interest over time. After building a connection, they send explicit videos or photos and initiate video calls to coax the victims into sharing their private content.
Once they share the private images and videos, the victims are then blackmailed for money, or else their photos or videos will be leaked on social media. The police have urged citizens not to respond to such explicit messages from an unknown person. People are advised to exercise caution while communicating with strangers on social media and dating sites.
