Navi Mumbai: A 39-year-old resident of Sector 19, Koparkhairane, died by suicide on May 26, allegedly after prolonged harassment by a private moneylender. The deceased, Ravindra Mohan Shinde, left behind a suicide note holding the lender responsible for his death and appealing to former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to ensure the "harshest punishment" for the accused.
According to police, Shinde was found hanging on the terrace of his residence. Initially, an Accidental Death Report (ADR) was filed. However, on May 27, a suicide note was discovered by his family, prompting them to file a formal police complaint after completing funeral rituals on June 2.
Based on the contents of the note and the family's allegations, Koparkhairane Police have now registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for abetment of suicide.
The accused, identified as 30-year-old Prathamesh Chavan, reportedly resides in Dawrinagar near Vakola Bridge, Santacruz. Police said that Ravindra had borrowed Rs 25,000 from Chavan around two months ago at an agreed interest rate of 12.5%. However, the suicide note alleges that Chavan later began demanding an exorbitant 30% interest and repeatedly harassed the victim when he was unable to pay.
According to the police, the deceased was struggling financially and was working odd jobs. “With no steady income, he approached the accused for a loan. The accused was known to the family, ” said an investigating officer.
The note describes the financial and emotional stress Shinde faced and allegedly accuses Chavan of driving him to the extreme step. It also appeals to the former Chief Minister to take action and deliver justice in the matter.
