Navi Mumbai News: Rare Seabird Masked Booby Rescued From Thane Warehouse, Undergoing Treatment For Respiratory Infection

A Masked Booby, a rare seabird species not commonly seen inland, was rescued from a warehouse in Kopri East, Thane, on Saturday afternoon. The rescue was carried out by the Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) following a distress call around noon.

The bird was discovered resting on a felled tree inside a warehouse near the Electric Bus Depot in Kanaya Nagar. A WWA rescuer promptly responded, secured the bird safely, and informed the Range Forest Department and other concerned authorities.

Rare Inland Appearance

"The seabird was immediately transported to PetVets Veterinary Clinic in Thane, where avian specialist Dr. Hemant Thange (MVSc) conducted a thorough examination. While no external injuries were observed, the bird was diagnosed with a respiratory infection, showed signs of general weakness, and had experienced mild weight loss," a statement by WWA said.

Plans for Release Post-Recovery

After receiving initial treatment, the Masked Booby was shifted to the WWA Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre located at Kokanipada, Manpada in Thane West. According to WWA officials, the bird is responding positively to medical care and is currently in stable condition.

The Masked Booby (Sula dactylatra) is typically found over tropical oceans and is rarely spotted so far inland. Its appearance in Thane is considered highly unusual and likely due to illness, exhaustion, or disorientation.

WWA Urges Public Support

WWA has assured that once the bird makes a full recovery and receives veterinary clearance, it will be released back into its natural marine habitat.
