Navi Mumbai News: NMMC Disburses ₹27.99 Crore In Scholarships To 36,104 Students For 2024-25

 The Social Development Department of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has successfully distributed scholarships to 36,104 students for the financial year 2024-25. 

The  scholarship funds were transferred directly to the students' bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

"The scholarship program aims to support students studying in private schools (except RTE admissions) and those from families with an annual income of less than ₹8 lakh. The initiative has also extended financial assistance to students from backward communities, project-affected families, municipal sanitation workers, widowed/divorced women, and daily wage laborers," said an official. 

A total of 43,791 applications were received under six different categories. After thorough verification, 36,104 students were found eligible as per the scheme’s guidelines. 

A total of ₹27.99 crore was disbursed to these students to support their education. The scholarship scheme covered students across various educational levels. 

Primary school students from Class 1 to 4 received ₹4,000 each, while students from Class 5 to 7 were awarded ₹6,000. Higher secondary students from Class 8 to 10 received ₹8,000, and those in Classes 11 and 12 were granted ₹9,600. Undergraduate students were provided ₹12,000, while postgraduate students received ₹16,000. Additionally, students pursuing technical or vocational training were awarded ₹8,000.

Scholarships were distributed across different sections of society to ensure maximum coverage and support. 

A total of 24,173 students from economically weaker sections received ₹18.3 crore, while 5,498 merit-based scholarships were awarded to backward class students, amounting to ₹4.12 crore. Additionally, 2,476 children from project-affected families were granted ₹2.19 crore.

 The children of municipal sanitation workers and contract workers benefited from ₹2.26 crore, covering 2,755 students. Another 1,121 students from widowed or divorced families received ₹1.03 crore, while 81 students from families engaged in stone quarry, construction, sand mining, and checkpoint labor were awarded ₹7.95 lakh.

By implementing a fully online application and verification process, the corporation claims to have ensured the smooth and timely disbursement of scholarships. Commissioner " the initiative promotes financial support for students while maintaining transparency and efficiency. Students and parents have expressed their satisfaction with the seamless execution of the program, acknowledging the significant relief it provides in managing educational expenses," said the commissioner Kailas Shinde.
