Navi Mumbai News: Neglected Plot Near DPS Nerul Sparks Outcry Amid NMMC’s Cleanliness Drive
“This plot could easily be turned into a mini forest, butterfly garden, or children’s green zone,” said a resident and DPS parent, adding, “Instead, it’s a public nuisance, just steps away from civic pride murals.”

A neglected plot opposite Delhi Public School (DPS) in Nerul is drawing criticism from residents, highlighting a stark contrast between the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) clean city campaign and the ground reality.
"While NMMC promotes its bid for the top spot in the National Cleanliness Survey with colorful murals and beautification drives along Palm Beach Road — including near its own headquarters — the unkempt corner near DPS remains littered with garbage, overgrown vegetation, and general disrepair. The state of the plot contradicts the civic body’s cleanliness slogans," Sunil Agrawal l, an environment activist from Save Navi Mumbai Environment group, said.
“This plot could easily be turned into a mini forest, butterfly garden, or children’s green zone,” said a resident and DPS parent, adding, “Instead, it’s a public nuisance, just steps away from civic pride murals.”
Residents report having raised the issue multiple times with municipal authorities, but claim no action has been taken. The area, surrounded by prestigious institutions and civic landmarks, is seen as a symbol of the larger disconnect between NMMC’s public image and actual service delivery.

Citizens are urging the corporation to take immediate, visible action — such as cleaning the site, developing it sustainably, and involving environmental NGOs and local stakeholders in its transformation. They say aligning civic messaging with real-world outcomes is key to truly earning the title of India’s cleanest city.
“Progress isn’t paint-deep,” said another resident. “It’s measured by what we do in places that matter — and are seen — by the community.”
A NMMC officer said, "We have received the complaint and we would be acting upon it."
