Navi Mumbai: Rabale Police have booked a labor contractor for negligence, more than a year and half after a 26-year-old construction worker died after falling from the fifth floor of an under-construction building in Ghansoli.
The deceased, Anisur Rahman Israfal Sheikh—a resident of Airoli Sector 1 and a native of Murshidabad, West Bengal—was employed at a construction site behind Meena Hospital in Arjunwadi. On September 2, 2023, Sheikh died after sustaining fatal internal injuries after a fall, which was allegedly caused by the lack of safety measures at the site.
"In the investigations of accidental death inquiry, we found that the contractor, Sariful Abu Bakkar Mandal Islam (42), had failed to implement basic safety protocols. We were waiting for the relatives of the deceased to come and record their statement. They came only now and then we registered the case," senior police inspector Balkrishna Sawant from Rabale police station said.
Islam had taken the labor contract from builder Gyanadev Parshuram Kadam but allegedly ignored mandatory precautions such as providing protective gear and securing the work area, police said.
Acting on the inquiry’s findings, police registered an FIR against Islam on Tuesday, under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code (causing death by negligence). The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
