Mumbai: A 22-year-old engineering student, Anant Dwivedi, allegedly died by suicide after jumping from the 45th floor of a high-rise residential tower in Goregaon East on Tuesday. According to the Aarey police, the authorities at Mumbai Airport had not allowed him to board a flight to Germany because he could not produce a hard copy of his residence permit.
According to the police, Anant Dwivedi, who was scheduled to return to Germany soon for an internship, allegedly died by suicide after he was unable to board his flight. No suicide note was found, but the investigation revealed that he was not permitted to fly due to missing documents. Although he showed a soft copy of his residence permit on his phone, the airline did not accept it. He did not inform his family about the incident.
The next day, he took an auto-rickshaw to the family’s vacant flat located in Goregaon East in the early hours of Tuesday. As he did not have change for the fare, he told the rickshaw driver he would return in five minutes with the money. However, he never came back. Moments later, he was found to have jumped from the 45th floor of the building.
Dwivedi was a final-year engineering student studying in Germany. He had recently returned to Mumbai and was staying at his family’s apartment in Oberoi E-Square, Goregaon East. The Dwivedi family, primarily based in Andheri, occasionally used the Goregaon flat.
His Google Pixel smartphone was recovered from the scene, but no suicide note was found. Preliminary investigations have confirmed that Anant was due to return to Germany soon to commence his internship.
The Goregaon Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) at Aarey Police Station. They are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning acquaintances to learn more about the incident.
The incident took place at Oberoi E-Square, a residential complex in Goregaon. Anant’s family, originally from Andheri, owns an apartment in the tower, which they occasionally use. Anant had flown back to Mumbai recently to meet his parents.
