The government will establish a state cultural centre and a museum in Mumbai, Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar told the assembly on Tuesday.
The initiative aims to preserve and showcase the state’s cultural heritage while fostering national and international cultural collaborations, he said.
“Maharashtra has a glorious cultural legacy, and it is the duty of the state government to preserve and nurture it,” Shelar said. “In line with this vision, a state cultural centre and a museum will be set up in Mumbai. The cultural centre will feature an auditorium, art galleries and a research centre, providing a platform for artists from around the world and attracting both domestic and international tourists.”
The museum will play a role in protecting Maharashtra’s ancient artefacts, including relics from archaeological excavations, rare paintings, sculptures, inscriptions, manuscripts, traditional textiles and weaponry, he said.
To facilitate the construction of the project, a plot of 14,418 square metres at Bandra Survey No 381 Land No 629 (P), located within the notified area of the Bandra-Kurla Complex under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will be transferred free of cost from the Revenue Department to the Cultural Affairs Department, the minister said.
The project is expected to become a central hub for Maharashtra’s cultural expressions, providing a platform for artistic exchange and strengthening the state’s position on the global cultural map, he added.
