Mumbai: An elevated road has been proposed in south Mumbai to link Parel with Haji Ali, aiming to ease traffic congestion in busy areas such as Dadar, Mahim and Matunga.

The planned corridor will connect Senapati Bapat Marg, a vital arterial road leading to commercial hubs like Phoenix Mills and Kamla Mills to the Haji Ali end of Lala Lajpatrai Road, where entry and exit points for the Mumbai Coastal Road are already in place. Once completed, the elevated road is expected to reduce travel time by up to 30 minutes during peak hours.

Currently, commuters traveling from Haji Ali via Tardeo, Pedder Road, Bhulabhai Desai Road, or the Mumbai Coastal Road face a lengthy and congested detour to reach Dadar.

The existing route forces traffic through Worli Naka, navigating a maze of roads including Annie Besant Road, Pandurang Budhkar Marg, Nehru Science Centre Road, and Keshavrao Khadye Marg–Dr. E Moses Road, looping around the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and NSCI Dome.

Likewise, southbound traffic from Dadar and Parel must follow this same circuitous route, leading to severe traffic bottlenecks and prolonged travel times, especially during peak hours.

The proposed 15-km, six-lane elevated viaduct will start near the Coastal Road’s entry/exit at Lala Lajpatrai Road, run alongside the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and end near E Moses Road on Senapati Bapat Marg.

It will provide seamless access to key roads like Gokhale Road, Lady Jamshed Road, Bhavani Shankar Road, and NM Joshi Marg, connecting commuters to major hubs including Siddhivinayak Temple, Shivaji Park, Lower Parel, and Mahim. Estimated at Rs 300 crore, the project is expected to ease congestion at critical traffic chokepoints.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s office has outlined the proposal in coordination with the Public Works Department (PWD) to enhance connectivity between central and southern Mumbai. However, the implementing agencies are yet to be finalised.

"The proposed six-lane elevated corridor, which addresses a critical missing link in the city’s east-west connectivity, will run along the periphery of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and pass near the NSCI Dome. The project is designed to ensure that no land acquisition is needed and that existing traffic flow will remain unaffected during construction," said an official from the Urban Development Department.
