Mumbai: In a shocking incident in Mumbai, a young man from Punjab was duped of Rs 90,000 by an autorickshaw driver during a short ride from Bandra to Andheri. The victim, 26-year-old Amulya Sharma, had recently arrived in the city in search of employment. On April 10, at around 5 a.m., Sharma hired an autorickshaw to travel from Bandra to Andheri.
Due to poor eyesight without his glasses, which he had forgotten that day, Sharma struggled to see clearly. Trusting the driver, he handed over his mobile phone and asked him to complete the fare payment using a digital payment app. The auto driver demanded Rs 1,500 from the victim but later committed fraud by transferring a staggering Rs 90,000 to his own account, according to a Saam TV report.
When questioned, the driver falsely claimed that the digital meter displayed the inflated fare. Sensing something was wrong, Sharma approached the Andheri Police Station and lodged a formal complaint. The police acted swiftly and arrested the suspect, a 32-year-old autorickshaw driver identified as Ramesh Yadav.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fare meter in the rickshaw had been tampered with, confirming suspicions of foul play. A case of cheating has been registered against Yadav, and further inquiries are underway to determine if he has defrauded other passengers using similar methods.
