Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed intense rainfall on Monday morning as the advancing southwest monsoon approached the city, causing widespread waterlogging and disruptions in public transport. The city woke up to heavy downpours, with several low-lying areas such as Kings Circle, Bandra and Andheri reporting water accumulation following overnight showers. More rainfall is expected throughout the day, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Waterlogging & Thunderstorm Reported
Visuals from across Mumbai captured scenes of vehicles navigating waterlogged roads and commuters making their way with umbrellas through gusty winds and continuous rain. Near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), thunder and lightning were also reported during the early morning hours.
Local Train Services Affected
The city's suburban train services, the lifeline for daily commuters, have been affected across all three major lines, Central, Western and Harbour. Central Railway trains are currently running behind schedule by 15 to 25 minutes, especially on routes between Kalyan and Kasara due to waterlogged tracks.
Although officials confirmed no new disruptions today, residual delays are expected. “Suburban trains are running with a delay of around 8–10 minutes due to reduced visibility caused by continuous rainfall,” said the Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway. Meanwhile, the Western Railway spokesperson said trains on its routes are operating normally.
Flights Affected Due To Heavy Downpour & Low Visibility
Air travel was also impacted. Low visibility at Mumbai airport led to flight delays. SpiceJet issued an advisory on social media warning passengers of potential disruptions and advised them to check their flight status on the airline’s website.
More Showers Predicted Today
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai is likely to witness intense rainfall with thunder and lightning over the next 3–4 hours. Gusty winds between 50–60 kmph are also expected in isolated pockets of the city.
Temperatures for Monday are forecasted to range between 23 and 31 degrees Celsius. IMD has predicted continued rainfall and cloudy conditions for the next few days.
Early Monsoon Arrival For Mumbai
The monsoon officially arrived in Maharashtra on May 25, nearly ten days earlier than its usual date. IMD officials confirmed that by Sunday evening, the monsoon had reached Dapoli in Ratnagiri district and was rapidly advancing northward.
They expect the monsoon to hit Mumbai within the next two days, potentially marking one of the earliest monsoon onsets for the city in recent history. With the city bracing for more downpours, residents are advised to remain cautious and check weather and transport updates frequently.
